USED FOR: Cleansing and purification, soothing, dream work, spiritual work, astral travel
Black sage (Salvia mellifera) is part of the Salvia family, otherwise known as sage, and grows naturally in central and southern California. Like white sage, black sage (also called mugwort) is used for cleansing and purification rituals, but black sage targets both the mind and the home as a “cure-all” method. It is often used to provide protection and encourage visions in various types of spiritual work, such as dream magic, shamanic journeying, and astral travel. People may use black sage as part of a healing bath to soothe aching muscles, tired feet, and headaches or tension. Some people use black sage to promote feminine energies and fertility because of its association with Artemis, who is the Greek goddess of hunting, the moon, and chastity.
